Where On Earth Is Kincasslagh!
‘Kincasslagh, you’re broadcasting from there? Where’s that,’ is the common reply.
‘Near Dungloe,’ I tell them.
‘Where?’
‘Near Letterkenny.’ Brows furrow at this.
For those who live here, they’ll know exactly where it is, and what it’s like. But for the unacquainted, please read on.
Kincasslagh is like heaven on earth. It never rains and the sun shines copiously all the time. Palm trees wave lazily in the cool refreshing breeze courtesy of the Gulf Stream. It is plentifully supplied with shops, and to pay for goods, we gather money from the trees each sundown. It would be good if the money trees could finance us at dawn too, as by morning most of the money is gone after all night discoing in the local hostelries. The people are tall handsome and winsome. Winter is only allowed to come one day in the year, to remind us what the rest of the world have to endure. That’s where we’re broadcasting from!
Would that it were like that. Kincasslagh can be found in the north-west corner of Ireland, is on the coast, and does indeed benefit from the Gulf Stream. The village has about 50 inhabitants, a school, church, pub and one shop. And dare I say it, a great hotel – Carey’s Viking House. The sun doesn’t always shine, but even the rain, wind, hail and sometimes ssnow, grace our lives. The people are great and extremely welcoming. You would go a long way to find better neighbours and friends. Is it any surprise that we’ve relocated to this part of the world!
At the risk of becoming like a Tourist Board advert, I’ll move on. It may be small, but one of Ireland’s biggest stars comes from here – Daniel O’Donnell. His music is loved worldwide. If you haven’t heard him, check him out . . . and of course, listen to some of his songs on Uplift Radio. Like the weather, like the people, like the landscape, Uplift Radio plays a wide variety of music and encompasses a wide range of programming. Check out our Schedule on our website and App to get a flavour of what we do. We’re even recruiting some Irish DJs to complement our old and not yet infirm current ones.
Go on, give us a listen. Monday 1st October is our official start, but we’re on the go now, testing and refining things.
